Exactly ten years ago Ed Solo & Skool of Thought’s debut artist album ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ made a sizeable impression across clubs, press and radio. It was a bottom heavy, vocal laced, feel good affair of varying tempos which ducked and weaved through the genres of dubstep, breaks and drum ‘n’ bass.
“We have been humbled by the constant stream of support for Random Acts of Kindness” says Skool of Thought who is also label manager for the now Australian based Against The Grain label. From tattoos of Darrison’s lyrics, to youtube cover versions and heart felt stories, it’s been a project which has resonated beyond their expectations. “We’ve decided to invite
a small group of talent who we greatly respect to rework the key tracks and keep the momentum going” adds Ed Solo.
Although Random Acts of Kindness is best known for its upbeat collaborations with MC Darrison, the album also has its deep and dark moments. Erb N Dub’s jump up drum ‘n’ bass remix of ‘We Play The Music’ is a no-holds-bared, heavy hitter aimed squarely at the dancefloor.
Likewise King Hydra, a bassline house duo from Brighton who have gained radio
support from the likes of Toddla T, continue to make waves with this break-neck rework of When I Was A Yout .
Ed Solo who has since been at the forefront of the UK’s Jungle revival with his ‘Welcome to The Jungle’ compilation series (No. 1 on Beatport) also remixes ‘When I Was A Yout’ in a drum & bass style, which has been a favourite over the summer’s festival season.
One of the most exciting additions to this hand picked group of remixers is the relatively new talent of Jesswah from Australia, who delivers a deep 115bpm groove which evolves over 5 minutes of lush beats and bass.
Finally, no ‘deluxe’ album would be complete without some brand new, unreleased material and Skool of Thought has teamed up with Aria Award winning Pat Powell of Melbourne Ska Orchestra fame to produce another feel good ska riddim in the shape of Spin Round Stylee.
